Are you interested in food, planting culture, and doing something that has a purpose? Then you should join the gardening club today! In this club, you will learn a lot of information about ethnobotany and farming culture. There are many benefits to joining this club, like being able to connect with other club members and gaining the skill to grow your own food. Generally, the gardening club will be a good choice for your time at John Dewey High School.
What’s the purpose of the gardening club?
“Why does this club exist?” is probably a question revolving around your head right now. According to Mr. Moody, the club president, “gardening clubs play a big part in making John Dewey a more green environment.” So the club exists to make the campus better and more beautiful for all of us. Isn´t that great?
What do you do at the gardening club?
Members of the gardening club deal with the steps to growing different plants and vegetables. For example, they germinate the seeds of the plants by planting them in small trays with soil and rockwool, and when they germinate, they will be transferred to a bigger garden to grow. Then they will use what they grow to make snacks and healthy foods.
Why the club was created:
The club was here in Dewey for more than 11 years, starting even before the current president, Mr. Moody, came to the school. According to him, “The way I was raised, we had really good fruits and vegetables, and what my parents cooked, we would use what was grown in the farmers market, which made me appreciate cooking with fresh fruits and vegetables, and I want the students of Dewey to learn how to grow fresh and healthy foods too”.

The achievements of the gardening club:
The gardening club used more than 1000 pounds of food scraps from staff and students last year and is planning to double that amount this year. They also build a big outdoor garden and pioneer a compost tea recipe.
More benefits of being part of the gardening club:
In case I haven’t convinced you to join the club already, here are even more reasons you should. First, in the club, you are able to bring home the vegetables you grow for your family or future meals. Joining the club is also a good topic to write about in your college essay since the people in the colleges like to see students do meaningful acts with their time in high school. The club is also a good opportunity for students to work and socialize with each other, so it’s a good way to practice the skill of teamwork and make friends. This actually worked for Mr.Moody, as he said “I also used to volunteer with composting, and it’s good to be in contact with people in my neighborhood and see them as friends and not strangers”. Generally, joining the club will benefit you way more than a lot of other clubs.

Future gardening club events:
There aren’t really any guaranteed events, but if you join the club, there are going to be multiple future trip opportunities to go on, which can be really fun, and some trips can also include the students of ethnobotany, so if you have a friend there, you should sign up.
Conclusion
The gardening club will be a great way to start (or add to) your school year, either as a freshman, a senior, or anything in between.
