JDHS Seniors get an amazing opportunity to volunteer at an internship with Maimonides. Maimonides Health, formally known as Maimonides Medical Center, is a health organization that specializes in hospital work, responding to various emergencies. They are most known for their success in Cardiac arrest and Stroke responses.
Their volunteer program is exclusive to students in high school and are affiliated with many schools across the area. JDHS is one of those schools that is affiliated with Maimonides Health. In this Volunteer Program, students will be able to choose and participate in various departments of the workspace of Maimonides. This includes working in an office environment, security work, and also working with nurses. This amazing opportunity allows for students to build their resume while also gaining an understanding and developing as a professional.
“My experience was very comfortable because everyone was really nice and don’t push me to do everything at once.” said senior Jia Kai Hu. “I would recommend it since there’s also a multitude of places in the hospital and offsite where you can go to gain work experience but also colleges like to see high schoolers do something that matters. Also they give a letter of recommendation which can also be really good.”
Senior Han Xiang Li provided his perspective on the benefits of volunteering, saying ”It was very professional and educational, I learned what working at Maimonides is like, since I was looking at blueprints of projects and plans they were doing around the hospital. I would recommend it since it is a one of a kind internship and you gain working experience which will help you when you pursue your career.”
Senior Vincent Bui also had positive feedback to report, saying “It was a very positive experience and environment to work in while also being able to gain professional experience. I have done internships in the past and from my experience I would say this is one of the best ones, Since this one practically guarantees you with a better resume- it looks good on college applications and since it’s in person, the experience is more meaningful.”
Internships come and go in various forms and sizes, many nowadays are remote ever since COVID-19, many are paid, many are not. All are meaningful when it comes to experience and gaining professional knowledge. However, what puts this internship ahead of others is that it is affiliated with JDHS specifically, and it’s at a renowned hospital. This makes it easier for students to have a more organized schedule from their school, but also since it’s at a more renowned place, in this case a hospital, where when mentioning it- many people will recognize its credibility.
This shows how great of an opportunity this is for students as colleges love to see the effort and extracurriculars in your applications. Everyone can be a scholar, but not everyone can be both a scholar and a valuable asset in activities of the real world outside of academic skills.
