Have you ever wanted to prepare yourself for future careers as a high schooler but confused how to do so?

That may be because you find yourself with a lack of knowledge of various job opportunities in school and out of school. John Dewey High School should provide students with knowledge of obtaining a job as a high schooler. This will allow students to learn discipline and understand responsibility upon entering the next stage of their life. Seeking out a job while also maintaining school obligations may seem difficult. However, with the assistance of the school, the students will have the opportunity to apply and start to understand managing the obligations of being both a student and an employee. Paid and non-paid experience can help teach students how to manage finance.

Students would like to make money with the rise of prices and considering that they must find a way to be independent and alleviate parents’ spending on children’s necessities and leisures. Also, students are willing to work but are unsure of the flexibility of working hours and being a student while trying to manage studies and work.

The list of student’s concerns should also concern their school. Student Council advisor Ms.Grace weighed in, saying “There are a lot of opportunities for kids at Dewey to get connected to jobs and internships”. She highlights that there are other faculty in the school that should be talked to when trying to locate resources. However, this raises concern, because the question arises, how would students know who to speak to when trying to seek these opportunities? It is not as openly promoted as it should be. She also agrees by emphasizing, “I think that a lot of kids graduate from Dewey with an empty resume, Dewey should be stepping in”. It is important that Dewey promotes and assists students balance between managing school and work experience before entering the stage of independence and life out of high school.

Opportunities

It is important that students get in contact with faculty such as Mr. Limbach, the work based coordinator. He would be able to reach out to students if they are interested in work. Students should have accessibility to opportunities and be aware of what possibilities are out there. Having experience is important and the key to success.
