John Dewey’s axe of the middle school is now officially in motion. You may have heard rumors last year and, yes- they’re true. However, students have no need to fear.
Many students might believe that it was Ms.Adelle that wanted to add this Middle School, but it was the Department of Education. The DOE felt that middle schools in the surrounding areas were overcrowded. Students can’t get a proper education when there’s too many kids to help. When the DOE was looking for a place to create, John Dewey had the space and academic reputation.
What does this mean for the future of Dewey?
When the middle school is finished, Ms.Adelle needs us to be “ready to receive middle schoolers as mentees”. Our student ambassadors are ready to set a strong example and show off the school’s potential. While the help of the student ambassadors is tremendous, the entire Dewey community needs to step up for the success of our incoming intermediate school.
How are the students affected?
Students who become mentors can gain community service hours. Our Teaching Academy can benefit greatly, since now they have the opportunity to become teacher assistants.
For those with younger siblings, this can create a sense of security. Now for those who don’t want to be around middle schoolers- don’t worry, they have their own building. Although high school students are separated, it should feel like one big school. We will have to share certain commodities like the auditorium.
Naturally, this creates new and exciting opportunities for our current Dewey students. Ms.Woods is the leading recruiter at John Dewey. According to Ms.Woods, “We now can mold and create a strong pipeline”.
When she found out about the news she was “completely elated”. She’s especially excited for the opportunities opening up for high schoolers. More internships will be available making it much easier for high schoolers to gain work experience. This also allows students to become student leaders in ways that weren’t previously available.
By next December, the building should be completed, and by September 2026 it will open.
