Prices of Broadway tickets typically average around $128. It is pricey, meaning that not everyone can afford to see a show. However, did you know that here at John Dewey High School, you would only need ten dollars to experience a Broadway show of your choice? This fee not only covers the ticket to the show, but also includes food and transportation to the destination. Which in this sort of economy, it is an incredibly good deal.
Under the program Broadway Bridges, it allows Dewey to offer more than just one Broadway show. From the month of October to November, there are at least 4 Broadway shows listed for students to attend. No matter which show it is, the price stays stagnant: ten dollars.
Broadway shows will always occur after the ninth period ends. Students are to be expected to arrive back to school—if they had headed out previously—by 5PM. Broadway shows can range anywhere from an hour to three hours, and after each showing, students are dismissed on site.
Not enough students in John Dewey take advantage of this opportunity, which in some cases, the tickets end up not selling. As mentioned before, Broadway tickets can cost up to $128, but through Broadway Bridges the price is only ten dollars. When questioned about this matter many students either claim that this is their first time hearing of such, or that they simply didn’t bother with it.
Understandably, there are many reasons as to why a student cannot attend a musical. One such being the timing, which can play a big factor into students’ availability. These shows do run later into the night. But Broadway Bridges is open all four years, depending on when each show is being listed. For seniors, whose schedules are typically emptier and have more leniency, this is a great chance to explore the various shows available on Broadway Bridges.
“I was too busy to go and see [the Broadway shows] before,” Mickey Ye, a senior at JDHS, said. “But I’m going to go this year, I want to experience it at least once.”
Students who have gone to at least one of the available Broadway trips all have something positive to say about it.
“It was pretty fun, we went to see Chicago,” Jason Gao, senior at JDHS, said. “Everyone should take this chance to capitalize on this intriguing opportunity to experience a once in life-time performance.”
At the moment, there are currently no upcoming Broadway shows that is still open for grabs; however, as the next season if Broadway shows begin, students can find permission slips to each respective show right outside of the senior advisor’s office. It is to be reminded that there is a limited amount of space available, and typically Broadway Bridges is on a first come first serve basis.
“It really depends on the number of tickets, but if averaged, it’d be about 15 students [per trip],” Ms. Escalera, senior advisor of Dewey, said. “Some shows would only have ten tickets, sometimes even less.”
If students have any more questions about Broadway Bridges, they can visit the John Dewey High School website, or find Ms. Escalera in room 137 during periods 6, 7, or 8.
