John Dewey’s graduating senior class of 2025 still has the whole school year left ahead of them before they move on to bigger things, so what is it they’ll be doing during their last months at the high school?
Being a senior at John Dewey High School can be stressful. It can be stressful being a senior at any high school for that matter. With college deadlines approaching and the process of applications, making or adding to resumes, and keeping grades up to enter dream colleges or universities, it’s a lot for a senior to handle, but that’s just how it is during the final, demanding stretch of high school.
However, that’s not the only thing they’re dealing with. They have the addition of attending school as they normally would, the only difference being that it’s their final year of high school, the place where they’ve made plenty of memories over the past three, soon to be four, years. How do they fare with it, what are their feelings on the matter, and what are they doing now?
Kelly Delgado, a senior at John Dewey, says, “Being a senior feels different than previous years because we have to apply for colleges, search for scholarships, and manage deadlines for applications. To add on, it’s basically a time where we have this nostalgic feeling and look back on our previous years.”
Delgado is currently in the process of preparing for college, getting her things together while also reminiscing about her years at John Dewey. It’s a process, a feeling a lot of other seniors are experiencing when it’s such a big change they’re making in their life as they enter the older adult world.
A senior who feels the opposite, however, is Allison Cazales. Cazales says, “I don’t think senior year feels different. We still have the normal classes to take. The only difference is figuring out what colleges we want to go to. Right now, I’ve only made a list of colleges I want to attend, and I still need to get recommendation letters from teachers and start my personal essay.”
It seems that while not everyone may feel the same about senior year, one thing Dewey seniors are all going through is the college process. But aside from that, what about their time spent outside of school as a senior, and does it affect them?
Delgado says, “I’m spending my time freely, and sometimes I put in the work of looking for colleges or exploring majors. Being a senior doesn’t really affect my free time at all, but it really depends on the person.
Cazales says, “I continue with my day as usual, doing the things I like and doing my hobbies, but I will usually set some time aside from my hobbies to focus on filling out information for the Common App.”
According to these seniors, even with their time outside of school, they’re still focusing on getting prepared for the next step to college, and it would appear that most seniors are concerning themselves with the same thing because of it being such a huge step in their lives. Nevertheless, they are also making sure to still have some time for themselves, enjoying their free periods and hobbies and continuing their days as normal.
