Students all around the world find themselves caught in an ongoing circle of schoolwork, extracurriculars, and social life. A lot of them are struggling to keep up with the learning process and are often overwhelmed by how many assignments, deadlines, and expectations they have. On top of that, there is often pressure from parents and teachers, which adds even more stress to their busy lives.
This constant pressure has a serious impact on students’ mental health, which is a common problem at John Dewey High School. Over the years, students reported decreased energy levels, concentration, dependability, and optimism, which drastically decreases their performance and can even lead to mental disorders like depression.
“I constantly feel like there are too many responsibilities for seniors. All this homework, college applications, and extracurriculars… There are days when the weight of it all feels like too much. My mental health has taken a hit, making it hard to focus in class and enjoy time with friends. I’ve realized that it’s okay to take a step back and prioritize my well-being,” a senior from John Dewey High School, Mariam Tanaruli, shared.
There are numerous solutions people have come up with that just never get mentioned. For example, we can encourage students to practice positive self-talk and focus on their accomplishments rather than failures. Acknowledging their efforts can help boost their confidence. Also, it is important to build a routine that includes time for both study and relaxation. It can help students feel more in control and less stressed.
Another great solution is volunteering or joining a community service. Helping others can lift up your mood and lower your stress. Students who volunteer can find a sense of happiness and meaning which will shift their focus away from the pressure they’re facing.
Students shouldn’t feel afraid to seek professional help when they feel overwhelmed. Going to the guidance counselor, a teacher, a friend, or a parent can provide the needed support that would make them feel inspired to go forward through their obstacles.
An anonymous junior at John Dewey High School shared their experience at a Social Emotional Group that they got into because of the struggles and fears that Junior and the upcoming Senior year bring.
“Every Friday in our school, the mindfulness group becomes a safe space for all of us where we can pause and breathe among the stress [of school life]. For me personally, it’s a time to connect, share out, and learn to express our emotions together. Being with each other not only brightens my mood but also reminds me that we’re never alone in this [journey]”, the student said.
While the responsibilities of high school and personal life may seem stressful at times, it’s essential to remember that taking care of your mental health is just as important as academic success. Students should never be afraid to seek help. With the right strategies and support, students can not only survive but thrive during their high school years.
