Ever wanted to show off your gaming skills within school? Well there are many students in Dewey that are really skilled in video games ranging from simple multiplayer games to competitive FPS (first person shooter) games.
E-sports are defined as a multiplayer video game played competitively for spectators, typically by professional gamers.
There are a diverse range of clubs/teams in John Dewey High School, so why specifically pick out E-sports? Well E-sports is a very big thing and as surprisingly as it is, it’s not big or well known in john Dewey high school.
Some students in John Dewey like seniors Marvin Wu and Ion Huang, and junior Vlad Varshavskiy expressed their positive opinions on John Dewey High School having an E-sport team, with Huang summarizing that “It could provide opportunities for more students in the school to participate in programs that represent that school”.
Though even if some may express some hope for an E-sport team, others say having an Esport team may not be too great. “Well how is the E-sport team going to be funded? How much should the budget be for the team if we did have one?” Wu questioned.
Schools having E-sports teams are a good thing, being that it provides fame, creates more opportunities for gamers, and could possibly win rewards for the school. “Having an E-sport team might not be so bad for Dewey, [An E-sports team] it provides another path for students to choose their after school clubs from.”, Varshavskiy said.
John Dewey did have an E-sport team previously.
EZ Esports helps provide the matches between high schools over the years. In 2021-2023, John Dewey had a main team and a support team for the popular video game Valorant. Though the Dewey Valorant team did not do as well as the other schools, they still had a team. Many of those players had said the reason it didn’t do too well was because of the lack of skilled players willing to join and were more focused on other clubs.

E-sports teams promote an environment where students in the team must work together even if the situation is extremely tense. Games like league of legends and Valorant promotes teamwork, there are situations in the games that require timing and communications or else you lose the entirety of the game.
Students could also have a lot of fun and unlock skills they were unaware they had- skills that could possibly help give a student more confidence in their abilities and themselves.

Though sometimes these games have the potential to get heated and toxic, these types of environments could also be grounds for a place to develop skills, such as communication, management of data/information, and faster processing. These skills could then be used in our everyday lives and maybe even our future or current careers.
