Many students throughout their high school years dread the idea of waking up early and arriving at school. This happened to many once the short but quick Thanksgiving break ended. Now, many students are slowly waiting for these 3 weeks to end, in order to relax and not stress out about going to school during the Christmas break which starts on the 21st of December.
The month of December might have to be one of the most stressful months during the school year and it’s even worse when factoring in the cold weather. December is the final month of the school year before the holidays, and many teachers tend to give exams around these final weeks to see what their students know before going off on the break and forgetting everything. Many students return in January forgetting most of the materials and having no clue what’s going on in their classes. This is usually due to students staying up late and worsening their sleep schedules or having other important things that need to be focused rather than school, such as family situations or working during the break.
“Honestly when a break ends you know it just ends but now since I’m used to it, it’s kind of normal. Just keep doing it until winter break, the break is most likely going to go by quick but once it’s over I will be sad about it” said Jacqueline Franco, a current senior at John Dewey High School. “Overall just excited for a relaxing break and getting to chill with my friends and family.”
Several students believe that breaks should be longer or that teachers should not be giving out so much work out towards the end of break. That they’re falling behind with all the work being stacked up against them and that there should be a longer break rewarded towards students because of all the difficult stressful tasks.
“I keep on working my butt off and having to stay up all night to only be able to do one assignment for my classes because those assignments usually consist of 1-3 pages.” said Ray Capitulo, a current junior at John Dewey High School. “I’m just excited for the break, I want to get the chance to have time and go out with my friends and family.”
In general, students should get the chance to stress out less about their grades during the winter break. Have the time to enjoy the break with their family or friends. Regardless if you celebrate any holidays, everyone should get the chance to relax during the break without having to constantly think about school until the New Year in January 2025 when we return on Thursday, January 2nd.
