Snowboarding is a rare school activity. However, it is more than just practicing skills. It helps students learn new talents and build a better mindset.
“Falling isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I could break my neck and I would still be okay.” Senior Jane He said.
At first, we didn’t have any opportunities to participate in winter sports like skiing and snowboarding until three years ago, when Mr. Moody and Ms. Woods (Assistant principal of the Art and STEM Academy) got this opportunity for the school. It’s associated with a foundation called “CHILL”. CHILL is all about board sports- snowboarding, skateboarding, etc.
Speaking about the origins of the program, the special education teacher and adviser of the gardening and skate clubs, said “I wanted to start skateboarding about three years ago and Ms. Woods knew about this organization and put me in touch with them and was able to do one of their programs at a skate park in DUMBO. In addition, CHILL does surfing and snowboarding. Every year they offer this opportunity to us around January, February, and March six trips to Mountain Creek in New Jersey.”
CHILL offers snowboarding learning sessions, providing the utmost care and equipment for a good experience. In addition, these sessions are free. Food such as pizza and buffalo wings is provided in every session, and transportation is free.

Going down with the snowboarders
Furthermore, during these sessions, we gained snowboarding experience and met new people with whom to connect.
CHILL has provided so much for a student’s learning experience, allowing us to generate interest and enhance our lives. It excites us, benefits our emotional and mental health, builds up our character, and motivates us to get in shape.
Because it was such a good experience, there will be more snowboarding sessions with Mr. Moody in the future. We also have this Winter4Kids school trip on March 12, 19, and 26 for more opportunities. Students will learn downhill skiing and other snow sports in Vernon Valley, NJ.
