As high school graduation approaches, students are facing a challenge: what should I do after high school? Should I go to college, should I go to the military, or should I get a job? While some students have a clear plan, most are uncertain about their future. According to a survey done by YouScience, about 75% of students do not feel prepared for college or any other decision. There are plenty of options, and no single path is right for everyone.
For many students, college is the most logical path. A four year university or a two year community college can provide valuable knowledge, open doors to many career opportunities, and increase earning potential.
“If you know you want to go to a specific career like Pre-Med, Education, or Engineering, then college is a great investment in your future,” says Benson Liu, a senior in John Dewey High School. “But it is important to research schools, programs, and cost before making a decision”
Community college is a great option for people who want to save money before transferring to a different university. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do right away so I decided to go to a community college,” says Benson Liu. “It gave me time to explore different fields without spending a lot of money.”
College isn’t the only way to land a stable career. Trade schools provide special training for a specific skill set like electrician, mechanic, medical technician. Most people finished their training in 2 or less years, started working right away, and don’t have any student debt.
“I would highly recommend trade school for anyone who wants to land a job that pays pretty well,” says Eric Liang, 2023 alumnus from John Dewey High School. “After high school I went to Baruch College to major in finance, but after 2 years, I realized finance is just not my thing so I decided to enroll in a trade school to become an electrician.”
Military can also be a great option for those who are looking for structure, discipline, and career training. Military can also offer tuition assistance and leadership experience. “I would tell students to take some time to research what interests them. There are many jobs that aren’t as well known that many people are successful in,” says Mr. Wong, a Math teacher in John Dewey High school, who formally was a combat medic in the military. “If college isn’t the path for you, think about other paths that you can take to develop your future.”
On February 13th, 2025, John Dewey High School is hosting a career day program to assist students in exploring post-high school opportunities. Students attended breakout sessions featuring professionals from many industries from healthcare, to media production, to entertainment. Alessandro Zamperla, President and CEO of Luna Park Coney Island offers various career opportunities for young high school students to start their career and potentially gain experience. The job titles can include ride operator and park manager.
One of the presentation’s biggest draws was the opportunity to climb up the ranks in their many departments from vending (food and beverage concessions), custodial, rides, etc . The guest speakers from the earlier breakout sessions also offer high school students insight into being an intern in a law firm or training to become future pilots.
Life after high school isn’t a one way path. Whether you choose college, a trade school, or military, take time to explore what works for you. Take advantage of opportunities like career days, internships, and college fairs to make informed decisions.
