Today, almost in every individual’s life, music plays a substantial role. Whether creating or listening to, it has always been a part of our lives. It brings out buried memories, improves our mood, gives us motivation, helps reduce stress and anxiety, etc. So, what role does music play in the life of JDHS students? Why is it so influential?
Let’s start off by analyzing what makes music so addicting. One of music’s greatest powers is its ability to evoke emotions. A single melody can bring you back to a cherished memory, make you smile, or bring tears to your eyes. Whether it’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve or “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish, music has an undeniable impact on our mood. ¨Music calms me down and freshens up my day. I listen to it on my way to school, and that makes sure that I’m starting my day peacefully and calmly,” said Amir Ahmetjanov, a student at JDHS.
Music also strengthens social bonds. It brings people together at concerts and helps express identity. It can help people feel a sense of belonging, which can bring people together. ¨Sharing my music taste with new friends or peers allows me to feel more connected and understood,¨ said Yumalai Alonso, a senior. One of the reasons this happens is because you can tell a lot about a person based on their music taste. It can help you understand what others are thinking or feeling, what they are going through. ¨By learning about their music taste, I get a sense of what that person’s vibe is and if they are nice or not,¨ said Ahmetjanov.
Music fuels creativity. It inspires artists, writers, and innovators by creating an atmosphere where imagination can thrive. Listening to it can stimulate the brain and achieve a sense of flow, which is a state of concentration and immersion.
In every corner of the world, music remains a constant partner. It’s a source of comfort, motivation, and joy. ¨It allows people to express themselves in ways they never thought possible,¨ said Alonso. It provides us with an outlet to express ourselves and connect with our emotions. During difficult times, it can operate as a tool for coping and healing, helping us relax and find comfort.
By running an independent poll, I found that currently one of the most popular artists is Rihanna. However, as expected, there was a lot of diversity in music genres. The poll showed that K-pop, rock, and rap were the most popular genres in the pool of people I interviewed. Artists like Tomorrow x Together, My Chemical Romance, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, and The Beatles showed up frequently.
