Another great woman at our school who deserves to be appreciated is Ms. Rosenblum. Ms. Rosenblum has been teaching at John Dewey for 20 years and transitioned into the assistant principal of social studies along her journey. “I’ve mentored a lot of the teachers in the department and now I’m in charge of them,” Ms. Rosenblum said.
However, the social studies department is not her only concern. She is in charge of numerous things: the Law Academy, National Honors Society and its club the Heroes Donate Blood Club, PM school, supervises the Advanced Placement as well as the dual credit classes, and she’s also in charge of a new seal, the Seal of Civic Readiness.
“I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t love it, I love the kids, I love being here, I love interacting with them, helping them, and doing special projects… There’s a ton of things we do to help the community and being a part of the community is important,” Ms. Rosenblum said. She is motivated by her passion for teaching daily.
“I come to work and it’s 7:30 [A.M.], I blink and it’s 10:30 [A.M.], I blink again and it’s 2:30 [P.M.], I love my job, my day goes so fast. I go home and I say, ‘Where did the day go?’. Aside from your family, support, and your health, those basic things, I think that loving your job is the most important thing,” she said. Ms. Rosenblum emphasizes the importance of choosing a job that you will love.
“I hope that the social studies department as a whole is happy, motivated and enjoy their jobs and feel supported through me running the department…The goal is to empower students and give students opportunities and to do whatever we can to benefit [them]… The more we can offer the kids the better,” Ms. Rosenblum said.
The goal of many teachers and staff at John Dewey like Ms. Rosenblum is to essentially do whatever they can for the benefit of the students, but some people fail to see that.
“Most of the people that run this school are women, did you notice that? I think it’s just a matter of always being positive and uplifting the person next to you… I would say just with anyone, but especially with women, I would say support, help and uplift, and if you do that, not only will it come back to you but it also is important to be supportive and empower each other.”
The fact that women make up the majority of the administrators here at John Dewey gives us all the more reason to try to appreciate them better. All students can benefits from Ms. Rosenblum’s advice to become more aware of the people around us, and give them credit for their efforts.
Let’s conclude our Spotlight on International Women’s Month by taking a look at the day-to-day of Ms. Frias.
