John Dewey High School National Art Honor Society (NAHS) hosted an Empty Bowls Fundraiser on April 10, 2025. The event is a collaborative effort between the NAHS and the JDHS culinary team to join the Empty Bowls Movement.
Empty Bowls, a community-driven initiative led by artists and craftspeople in cities and towns worldwide with the goal and commitment to making a positive impact in the world. Their objective stands to raise funds for food-related charities that support and provide meals for those in need within their communities.
“Empty Bowls stands against world hunger, and through this event, we want to give the space and time for such a prevalent issue”, said Maybo Choi, the president of the NAHS. “Our ultimate goal is to spread awareness and funding for local food banks and organizations fighting this cause”. Which expresses the mission of this event and the dedication to fighting world hunger.
The event took place in rooms 266, 270, and 271 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Any students or staff members of John Dewey were welcomed to attend the event. Rooms 266 and 271 are rooms for glazing the bowls, cups, and cappuccino mugs.
In order to enter the event, you need to pay for an entry which costs $10. You can secure your seat at the event with the QR codes on posters around the school. The entry money will be donated to the local food pantry called “Salt & Sea Mission”.

Salt & Sea Mission is a local food pantry which works to provide meals and support those who are in need. At the event, attendees glazed and decorated their ceramic soup bowls, cappuccino mugs, or cups. The NAHS members provided instruction and guidance throughout the whole glazing activity.

They also made sure the bowls and cups were properly glazed before collecting them. NAHS members will later fire the bowls and cups in the ceramics room in order to preserve the paint that was glazed on them earlier.
Lunch was served to the hungry painters- attendees went to Room 270 halfway through the event to enjoy some appetizing and juicy spaghetti as well as crispy bread made by Mr. Carito and the ACES program students. In addition to enjoying the warm and filling meal, the attendees were also able to participate in a creative activity.

As stated earlier, the entry fee will go straight to Salt & Sea Mission to hopefully help out the members of our community who are in need. By participating in this event, not only did the attendees enjoy a delicious meal, they were also able to help take steps to ending hunger in the school community. This experience also allowed the participants to work on their artistic skills while contributing to something meaningful and sincere.
