Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will take office in January 2026, and members of John Dewey High School are already sharing their thoughts on what his leadership could mean for the city and its schools. .
Senior Kumushoy Khalimova expressed her excitement about Mamdani’s election and what it represents for the future of city leadership. Khalimova said she was pleased to see increased representation in politics, explaining, “I am happy that politics is getting more diverse and I’m happy that he was the chosen one by most of the residents across the boroughs.”
She also shared support for Mamdani’s campaign message, noting that it resonated with everyday New Yorkers. “I liked his campaign because he made a lot of good points that related to New Yorkers’ well-being and their way of life,” Khalimova said.
Looking ahead to his term in office, Khalimova said she believes Mamdani will follow through on his promises. “I think he will accomplish everything he promised like lowering taxes, raising wages, free buses, lowering cost of living, and a rent freeze,” she said.
Not all reactions were fully optimistic. Social Studies teacher Mr.Pusz offered a more measured perspective, pointing out the limits of mayoral power. “As a homeowner, I am generally content with the direction the city will be going in, but I do not believe many of Zohran Mamdani’s policies will be in effect because in order for them to be actual policies he’s going to need the approval of the state governor as well as the state assembly,” he said.
Despite these concerns, Mr.Pusz was amazed with Zohran Mamdani’s ability to connect with voters, especially younger generations. “He has come out with his social media to connect with residents, and I think he will continue to use social media in a smart and progressive way going forward into his administration,” he said.
From an education standpoint, Social Studies teacher Mr.Farran emphasized how Mamdani’s affordability- focused platform could indirectly benefit students. “While not directly related, I feel as though his policies oriented toward making NYC more affordable will hopefully alleviate financial concerns that many students and families have,” he explained.
Mr.Farran also highlighted the importance of understanding the structure of city government. “Mamdani is not going to have absolute control over New York City.. we have to ensure that our expectations are realistic and understand that Mamdani is just one moving part in a larger system,” he said.
Reflecting on the campaign itself, Mr.Farran described it as energizing and youth- focused. “I thought his campaign was refreshing because it felt like a true grassroot campaign,” He said, adding that Mamdani’s use of TikTok made his message feel “very relevant to youth voters.”
As Zohran Mamdani prepares to take office, reactions from the school community reveal hope. While many are inspired by his promises and outreach to NYC. Together, these perspectives reflect the broader conversation happening across New York City as residents wait to see how campaign ideals translate into leadership.
