The New York Knicks have finally made it back to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. For a lot of fans, this moment feels unreal after so many years of losing and rebuilding.
Now, the entire city is buzzing with energy. Even John Dewey High School feels different. Dewey staff and students are wearing Knicks shirts in the hallways, teachers are talking about the games before class, and some staff members have decorated their rooms in orange and blue. The whole school has transformed into one big Knicks fan club.
Our very own school basketball team, John Dewey, doesn’t exactly have the best record in the PSAL. Dewey players try hard, but they have endured some rough seasons.
While people often joke about the contrast between the two teams, the Knicks’ success is actually inspiring Dewey’s players to stay motivated.
“Don’t give up,” freshman basketball player Ethan Coto said when asked how the team can take inspiration from the Knicks. “They came back from 29 points. If we just don’t give up, keep playing our game, and do what we’re supposed to do, we’re going to be fine. If we have that same mentality during the game, even if we are down that much, we can come back instantly.”
This year’s Knicks team isn’t built on flashy superstars. Instead, they win by playing hard and never giving up. Head Coach Mike Brown has pushed them to fight for every possession, and the players have truly bought into that gritty culture. Point Guard Jalen Brunson has officially become the heart and soul of the team.
The excitement has sparked plenty of healthy debates around campus. “My prediction is that the Knicks close it out in 5,” said Dean Ruiz. School support staff member Mr. Hanson disagreed, noting, “I believe that the Knicks will lose Game 5 on the road and win Game 6 back at the Garden.”
Everywhere you go, students talk about the playoff run like it’s a movie. Everyone from school safety officers to support staff argue in the cafeteria about who played the best.
Some teachers even admit they stayed up way too late watching the games. When the Knicks won the Eastern Conference, the entire building was celebrating the next morning.
This Finals appearance means a lot to both the franchise and our school community. It shows the Knicks are finally on the right track, proves Brunson is a legitimate superstar, and brings pride back to New York basketball.
No matter what happens next, the Knicks have changed their narrative and John Dewey High School feels alive because of it.
