In February, John Dewey High School was filled with love! Our school recently hosted ‘Cupid’s Date Night’ – a free event for students to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 13th after school for students.
The event included food, desserts, activities, and a DJ playing music in the cafeteria. Afterwards, students were invited to settle down in the auditorium with a screening of the movie ’10 Things I Hate About You’.
Students had the chance to choose what movie they wanted to watch, and they got to hang out and spend time with their friends before the winter break.
Ms. Alteon, who serves as the Yearbook Committee Advisor and Coordinator of Student Activities, worked with Principal Adelle and staff to make this event possible.
According to Ms. Alteon, the process of making this event wasn’t hard at all- but she did have a whole different plan when planning with YBC. However, because of the Black History Month Show was being held later in the month- she didn’t want students paying for both events.
“So I talked to Ms. Adelle if we could make an event that was free for the 13th so there was something for the students to do, and something special for Valentines,” said Ms. Alteon.
Ms. Adelle’s approval meant this event was able to happen free of charge. Staff also stepped up to volunteer their time and services to make the event engaging.
Ms. Escalera hosted a paint and sip, Ms. Michel offered bead making, Ms. Cingari with card making, Mr. Yung who made desserts, and Ms. Alteon who provided the board games.
“I am having a blast and I’m enjoying the music that the DJ is playing,” said Abdullah Usman, a senior at John Dewey High School.
A lot of students were looking forward to this event because it provided students an opportunity to attend an afterschool event that didn’t require the purchase of a ticket. Many afterschool events at JDHS require the purchase of a ticket (usually anywhere from 5-10 dollars) to participate/gain admission.
“I was looking forward to spending time with my friends and was also looking forward to the food,” said Laisha Martinez, a senior at John Dewey High School.
This event brought a lot of students from different grades together and it was very nice to see them interact with each other, having fun, and making memories.
In the future they want more events like these because it’s a nice gesture and “it’s fun and more people can come and enjoy this for free,” said Abdullah Usman.
