In previous years, the Lunar New Year celebration event hosted at John Dewey High School has been very popular and successful. Attendees come for both spectacular performances, and great food that was previously provided for free. This year however, the school will not provide food for this year’s celebration.
Equally as important as the performances, is the food that students come to have with their friends. However, despite this setback, Black Student Union will fundraise by selling snacks.
“It’s alright, I mean, the school never made any promises on food,” said Harry Chen, an attending student, and member of the student council. The school may provide food for events, but it’s usually on an event to event basis considering the budget of the school.
“Snacks will be for sale by Ms. Alteon, to fundraise for BSU,” said Ms. Caraballo. Other clubs and student organizations were invited to sell food and snacks, but only Black Student Union had accepted the offer.
K-Pop Club was one of the clubs who was invited to sell food and snacks, but because they’re more performance based, they will not be selling anything. “No, K-Pop Club won’t be providing food for the event, but I would be paying out of pocket for those who attend”, said Mr. Serna.
“Ms. Caraballo and Mr. Serna provided food for the volunteers,” said Alexander Liang He, a volunteer, and DJ for the event. “The students who attended the event had the chance to buy food at the concession stand.” Liang He said.
Despite the food being a big part, many people attended the event for the performances, and the chance to be with their friends and watch them perform on stage.
Even if students don’t celebrate Lunar New Year, all are welcome to attend or audition for future performances.
“K-pop club isn’t just about the music genre, it’s about giving people the opportunity to dance and perform”, said K-Pop Club President Zixuan Li.
